Empowering India is an initiative of Liberty Institute. The Institute is a public policy think tank dedicated to advocating ideas that enhance individual freedom. But to be effective, public policy proposals need to be politically acceptable. This required understanding of the total political process, which included the electoral process, political parties, candidates, and the citizens. Empowering India, an initiative of the Liberty Institute, and supported by the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung, was among the winners in the e-governance category of the Manthan Awards 2009 for South Asia. The awards seek to recognise innovative digital contents in over a dozen categories. This is the sixth year that the Digital Empowerment Foundation is hosting this event. |

This year the jurors of the Manthan Awards 2009, had to choose eight awardees for the e-governance category from 85 valid nominations. Many of them were quite inspirational. Of the many Bihar-based e-governance projects submitted as nominees this year, the Manthan jury picked Jaankari. Then there was the exemplary project devised by the Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh. Also, in this category of innovative content is Empowering India, writes Osama Manzar in his column in the Mint. |

After Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, and Ranchi, Guwahati is the tenth city in the country where the initiative is being introduced. Mr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister for Information Technology, Government of Assam, will launch the website. The event will be followed by a panel discussion, on Sept 11, 2009. |

The problem is that Twitter simultaneously encourages extreme brevity and endless communication. Each shot is short but you can keep twittering all day if you want – and many addicts seem to do just that. If Marx really had lived in the age of Twitter, he would probably not have been sending out thunderous political messages. Still, even if Twitter will not clinch an Iranian revolution, it does a fine job of providing snap-shots of unfolding events. In Iran, the medium’s terseness and immediacy came into its own, reports Gideon Rachman in the Financial Times. |
